Janmashtami holds great significance in the Hindu religion. It is believed that Lord Krishna was born on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight in the month of Shravan (August-September) to rid the world of sin and darkness. • Fasting and Prayers: Devotees observe a fast, staying awake through the night singing bhajans and offering prayers to the infant Krishna.
• Dahi Handi: In regions like Maharashtra, the "Dahi Handi" tradition is popular, where teams form human pyramids to break a clay pot filled with curd, symbolizing Krishna's love for butter.
• Midnight Celebrations: Since Krishna was born at midnight, temples and homes are beautifully decorated, and the idol of baby Krishna is placed in a cradle to be worshipped.
• Cultural Programs: Dance dramas (Rasa Lila) and devotional songs are performed, depicting scenes from Krishna's childhood, his playful pranks, and divine miracles.
